Kőrösi Csoma Sándor Memorial House

Chiuruș

The history of the construction of the Sándor Kőrösi Csoma Memorial House in Csomakőrös is that the Kőrösi Sándor Csoma Public Education Association planned to build a memorial museum in Kovászna. The construction failed due to financial reasons. The association then decided to build the memorial house in Csomakőrös in 1998. The plot – opposite the school - was donated to the church for the purpose of preserving the memory of Sándor Kőrösi Csoma in some way. It seems likely that there was the birthplace that had burnt down in Csoma's childhood, and the family moved to the famous walnut trees afterwards.

The association gained powerful help from the companies in Kovászna and Sepsiszentngyörgy, and from entrepreneur Zsigmond Lőrincz, a later mayor. The construction of the imposing Székely gate, which in its entirety - design, carpenter work, design and finishing of motifs - was made by Székely Gate carvers from Kovászna. The association did not claim ownership rights over the building, so it was taken care of by the local Reformed Church. The memorial house was conceived to display Sándor Csoma childhood and youth. The equipment and the materials posted on the walls are adapted to this, carefully selected by the former director of the Székely National Museum, Ádám Konya.
