Kriza János Memorial House

Aita Mare

Nagyajta is not only famous for its historic fortified church, but for a distinguished personality born here, János Kriza (1811--1875) Unitarian bishop, who is today remembered by the village on bronze plaques, a bust and an exhibition. The local school was named after him as well. János Kriza not only made his mark as an ecclesiastical dignity, but was a great collector of folklore, poet and translator as well.

His main work is the Székely folklore collection, the Vadrózsák published in 1863, which had several editions. In recognition for his literary work, the Hungarian Academy of Sciences elected him among its members. In Nagyajta, the former sexton’s house was converted into János Kriza Memorial House. In one of its rooms, there is an exhibition showing the work of Kriza, the other room is home to the ethnographic collection that is linked to his oeuvre.
