Golgota / Jesus gorge

Golgota from Şumuleu, also known as Jesus gorge, is the best known open Station of the Cross in Transylvania.

One can reach the west side of Șumuleu Mic hill by following the path through the fir tree forest to the Salvator chapel. On the steep slope, there are the Stations of the Cross representing the sufferings of Jesus, which are visited by a lot of people that pray on the occasion of the Pentecost pilgrimage. The stations are a symbol of a person’s or a group’s faith and sacrifice.

The first written mention of Golgota from Șumuleu dates back to 1834. The old wooden crosses were replaced with stone ones after 1868, but nowadays there are only few of them left.

The new crosses, made by the stone sculptor Kovács Béla from Jigodin, were put in place at the beginning of the 20^th century.
