Rhédey Castle

Sângeorgiu de Pădure

The castle received its present form, in late Baroque style, during the last renovation (1807-1809), thanks to the building’s former owner Count László Rhédey. There are several assumptions and records about the formation of the original building. According to tradition, the building was the site of a medieval monastery until the Reformation.

During the 16th century Protestant Reformation, the Barcsai and Kornis families built a first castle, considered to be the predecessor of today’s castle. The works were probably carried out in 1569. The Rhédey family settled here in the 17th century, its first representative being János Rhédey. In his time, in 1632, there was certainly a multi-room, cellar building, which was the first Rhédey mansion. The memorial stone placed at the last construction of the building marks the year 1663 for the year of construction, which also refers to the "Rhédey age" bearing the name. In the 19th century there was a beautiful castle park enclosed by the building.

In 1812, in this castle was born and raised Countess Claudine Rhédey, the great-great-grandmother of Queen Elizabeth II of England.
