Bezid Lake

Bezidu Nou

Bezid, is located in the valley of Bezid brook, 32 km south-east of Târgu Mureș and 7 km of its commune Sângiorgiu de Pădure.

The medieval Reformed Church was rebuilt in the 16th century. The bell tower was built in 1821. The Unitarian Church was built in 1810 in the place of the old wooden church.

Between 1975 and 1990 a dam was built, which created an artificial lake, Bezidul Nou Lake, by sacrificing the village Bezidu Nou. The population was evicted and the village was flooded. Since the summer of 1988, on the floor of the lake rest one thousand houses , a clinic, a kindergarten and a Unitarian church. Until the summer of 2014, the Catholic Church which was built on a hill pierced the surface of the water, until it decayed and finally collapsed into the lake on June 2014.

Bezidul Nou Lake, which swallowed for good an entire village into its waters. Bezidul Nou village was renowned for the numerous religions of its inhabitants who succeeded in living together in peace. The village has a tradition in straw weaving and apiculture.
