Minorite Monastery

The Minorite Monastery in Târgu Secuiesc is one of the best-preserved Baroque-style ecclesiastical buildings in the Trei Scaune region.

Franciscan monks settled in this building during the 1690s, and later, they were replaced by the Minorite monks. According to records, the foundation stone of the so-called "two-story monastery" was laid in 1722. After long construction efforts, the back section of the monastery and its wings facing the street were completed in 1795. The remaining section, including the other wing, was finalized in 1828. In addition to the spacious church dedicated to the Holy Trinity, the monastery encompasses a square-shaped courtyard.

The condition of the building deteriorated significantly after its nationalization in 1948, with the ceiling collapsing in several places. The idea of restoring the former monastery emerged in 2014, with the local council of Târgu Secuiesc attempting to secure European Union funding for the renovation. However, the proposal was rejected. Father Csaba Böjte took on the responsibility of transforming the building into a dormitory for disadvantaged youth. He successfully applied for funding from the Bethlen Gábor Fund, securing a total of 3.2 million euros for the restoration of the building. This effort saved and restored one of the most beautiful structures in the Székely Land.

In 2021, the building of the monastery was handed over to the administration of the Saint Francis Foundation of Deva, led by Father Csaba Böjte.
