Chapel Saint Stephen

Mount Perkő (719 m), located between Kézdiszentlélek and Kiskászon is considered to be a genuine scene of observation. Chapel Saint Stephen, built on its peak in the 13th century in late Romanesque style, draws the onlookers` attention from a considerable distance. It is a rectangular building provided with several domes and towers. On the facade of the porticos there are the initials of Kálnoky Sámuel and his wife Lázár Erzse , the coats of arms of the two families as well as the motto of the Kálnoky family - Non est mortale quod opto. Visitors can also see the year 1686 carved into the wall.

The rotunda has a single open window, but nearby another one is walled up one. The chapel was made of brick and rubble, whereas during the construction of the towers and domes the only material used by the builders was brick. The wall is 85 cm thick. Its roof is made of tin painted in red, which probably replaced the former building material which was wooden shingle. The floor of the building is made of stone.

The only decoration of the relatively simple inside is a wall painting made in the 1600s, which was opened up in the 1990s in the eastern part of the chapel. On it one can identify the figures of King Szent István, Szent László and Bishop Saint Gellért.

Nowadays Perkő is the most visited place of pilgrimage in Háromszék. On 20th August thousands of people listen to the holy mass held at the outdoors altar.
