At an altitude of 1050 m, the lake is situated in the eastern corner of the Ciomatu Mare/Nagy-Csomád massif, at the southern foot of the 1177 m high Mohoş/Mohos peak. The diameter of the 10 m deep lake is of 800 m, its surface measuring 80 hectares. Actually, the Mohoş/Mohos is a mountain muskeg, preserving only 13 of the previously inter-connected water bodies.
The image of the fir-trees anchored into the moss, with the black dense blueberry bushes beneath, is exhilarating. On seeing that entire blueberry around, the locals gave the swampy moorland the name of „Kokojzás” (translator’s note: the English equivalent „blueberryish”).
The protected area still reveals some rare plants, such as the round-leaved sundew (Drosera rotund folia), the paddle-leaved sundew (Drosera obovata), the Great sundew (Drosera anglica) and the cranberry (Vaccinum oxicoccos), as well some plants coming from the Ice-Age – the Bog-rosemary (Andromeda polifolia), the black crowberry (Empetrum nigrum) and the cotton grass (Eriophorum vaginatum). As for the tree vegetation, we ought to mention the black alder (Alnus glutinosa), the Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris), the white birch (Betula pubescens) and the mountain pine (Pinus mugo).
