Thúry-Bányai Castle

Tamașfalău

In the early 17th century, the Thúry family came to Tamásfalva from Hungary through marriage. Its members subsequently, had more important positions in Orbaiszék. The most famous among them, was Gergely Thúry, parliamentary representative, and captain of 1848. After his death, the estate became the property of the Bányai family. On the south side of the road leading from Tamásfalva to Zabola, tall pine trees and some horse chestnut trees indicate that once the manor had a well-designed front garden.

The two-story, mansard roof building has rectangular floor plan and its distinct feature is the different design of its façades. On the side, overlooking the garden there is a wooden columned porch over a stone pillar arch row, two lateral bays and a staircase in the middle break the main façade. The decorative elements of the outer wall surfaces are of empire architectural style. Based on its style, the building can be dated to the first half of the 19th century.

The imposing mansion was nationalized in the middle of the 20th century, and since 1973, it was used as a cultural centre. After the change of regime in 1989, the descendants of former owners legally recovered the building and sold it to the municipality of Zabola. This way, the village community can still use it as a cultural centre.
